Signals in law-firm business development are discrete observations that may change how a firm understands a client need, relationship or reason to act. A legal-demand signal connects that observation to a plausible legal need. Neither establishes that the client needs outside counsel, that this firm is relevant, or that an opportunity is open.
A signal is an observation; an opportunity is a managed possibility of a specific client engagement. An opportunity combines one or more signals with firm context and carries an owner, qualification status and next decision. Several signals can inform one opportunity, and a well-sourced signal can produce no opportunity at all.
Descriptive signals report an event or current condition. Predictive signals use observations to form a testable expectation about a specified future need or decision. The same observation can be descriptive about one event and predictive about another; calling it predictive does not establish accuracy or that counsel selection is still open.
Law firms can seek earlier opportunities by connecting relevant observations with client context before counsel selection becomes difficult to influence. That requires testing the legal need, checking relationship access and delivery relevance, and assigning the next decision. Earlier means earlier in the client’s decision process, not simply faster after an announcement.
Signals suggest a reason a client situation may deserve attention; relationship intelligence helps a firm understand who can credibly clarify that situation and engage. Combined with relevant expertise and timing, they support qualification. Contact frequency alone does not establish trust, buying influence or permission to approach a client.
An alert delivers information; it does not establish a specific client need, firm relevance, an open decision or an accountable next step. Those conditions require qualification before an alert becomes a managed opportunity.

As AI takes over more routine legal work, firms that invest in relationship capital now will be the ones that thrive in the new model. The firms that don't will be left competing on price.
